Framed with steel alloy for safety, the seat offers side-impact protection with aluminum-reinforced sides and energy-absorbing EPS foam. View larger. | Steel Frame and Side Impact Protection The Radian 65SL Convertible Car Seat's is constructed with a steel alloy frame for ultimate safety and strength, providing security for your child and peace of mind for you. The seat's side impact protection features include aluminum-reinforced sides and energy-absorbing EPS foam, which work together to protect the child's head and body and provide a thorough, superior level of protection. For added safety, the seat is also equipped with a forward- and rear-facing tether system and is the only car seat in the market to offer SafeStop technology, an energy-absorbing harness system. Easy Installation, Portability, and Convenience Like many car seats, the Radian allows you to easily install it by engaging the seat's Latch connectors onto a vehicle's Latch bars, which can be found in vehicles built after 2001. For drivers of vehicles without Latch, the good news is that the seat can also be easily installed with the vehicle seatbelt. For cars with Latch, the seat's SuperLATCH system is a prominent feature that offers added convenience and increased safety. What makes the Radian 65SL different? Typical Latch systems have limited weight capacities of 40-48 pounds. Once a child has reached this weight limit, instructions call for the caregiver to unlatch the seat and reinstall it using the car's seatbelt, a method that increases the likelihood of incorrect installations. The 65SL's SuperLATCH system extends that weight limit to 65 pounds. Beyond the added convenience, SuperLATCH also helps increase safety, as a Latch system is an easier installation method with less room for error than using the seatbelt method. Further easing installation is an Easy-Tite adjuster for firm fastening and rubber non-slip grips along the seat bottom to prevent car seat slippage. Because safety is a priority to Sunshine Kids, the Radian not only meets and exceeds US mandated standards, but has also been tested to the more rigorous, yet voluntary NCAP standard which simulates more severe accidents. Of particular convenience to daycare providers and parents of multiple children, the Radian's slim design fits three across in most vehicles, making it ideal for sedans and smaller SUVs. Plus, it still provides ample shoulder room for growing children. Yet another unique feature of this car seat, the Radian is the only convertible car seat on the market that folds flat, so you can store it away and take it along for travel. Comfort Features for Growing Children This innovative car seat will grow with your child from infancy to childhood and is designed with several features to ensure your child's comfort, whether you're driving across town to the babysitter's or across the country for the holidays. These comfort features include comfort foam padding, a long seat, and adjustable seat positions. Especially pleasant for those long rides, the comfort foam padding around the seat and extended seat bottom combine for an extra comfortable fit. The forward facing dual recline positions offer the child the optimal recline angle of choice. Additionally, the five harness positions and three buckle positions make it easier than ever to customize the car seat to ensure your child is properly secured as he or she grows. And featuring two of the highest weight limits in the market, this convertible car seat is suitable in the rear-facing position from 5 to 40 pounds. When children are old enough, they can be positioned in the forward-facing position up to a weight of 65 pounds. And for easy child-boarding, the seat is designed to sit low on the seat. The car seat is covered with an easy-to-wipe, ultra-suede fabric that comes in neutral charcoal/grey to complement most vehicle interiors. Excellent seat December 30, 2009 J. Rogers 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
I own two of these seats, I've installed them forward facing in several vehicles. The seat fits well in every vehicle I've installed it in, the latch and tether systems are easy to operate. The seat folds so it is easy to transport and store. The seat is lower and narrower on the outside but wider on the inside than any other car seat I've owned (mostly Britax) so with a little planning it is easy to fit additional seats on either side of it. It is by far the most solid feeling car seat I've owned.
No complaints from the child in the seat, so it must be comfortable. He has been in it for a few five to eight hour stretches.
It is also worth noting, I called the technical support line with a rather obscure question about the latch system (specific to a vehicle) and the technical support person I worked with was both knowledgeable and friendly. It is rare these days to call support, get right to a human and get excellent service.
Excellent product with a company that stands behind it.
Forget the britax, this is the best car seat December 29, 2009 Omar Shahine (Seattle, WA) 6 out of 8 found this review helpful
We have two Britax carseats, the roundabout and one Marathon.
Needless to say they are both huge, and cumbersome. Especially to travel with. When you have a child the last thing you need is some large odd shapped object to truck around the airport.
The Radian is excellend for travelling. While it's heavy, it is so slim and easy to cary when folded. This is especially true if you get the travel back that they make.Sunshine Kids Radian Travel Bag, Black
This is a really high quality car seat. No styrafoam like the Britax, but nice foam (almost like memory foam). It's very simple to install using the latch system, especially if you child is forward facing.
In both our cars this car seat fits well and allows for 2 passengers to fit comfortably in the back. I also appreciate how "low" our daughter sits with this car sit which makes it more comfortable for her and us.
what I was looking for July 28, 2010 J. Jurkowski (New York) My toddler is tall for her age so she outgrew her Britax car seat in terms of the height (straps below her shoulders and head above the seat), but not the 40 lb weight limit. I needed to find something for a child under 40lbs that would still be useful until she was 8 (NYS law). I did not want to buy one that was for infants as well since I no longer needed that option and that added to the cost. I researched a lot of car seats including Britax, Recaro, Evenflo, Graco, etc. According to the many reviews I read on NHTSA and other websites, those had some limitations. My toddler has broad shoulders and many seats were said to be narrow. This is one of the few that was highly rated and met my shoulder and other space needs. Consistently across multiple websites it has received great reviews. It was easy to install, it seems very solid, and my toddler finds it comfortable.
Pretty versatile, but it's a brick April 7, 2010 P. J. Connolly (Philadelphia, PA) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
We bought this for air travel and for a small Subaru wagon after our daughter was spilling out of her infant seat. It has many installation options, so you have to find the right one in the manual. There are little quirks that you can't gloss over, e.g. you have to use the safestop accessory in forward facing <40 lb installation. The LATCH system works fine, and I finally figured out that the "top tether" in my cargo area wasn't just some random tie down. I tried to mount this seat rear facing at first, but there was NO way I was going to get a passenger in the front seat, because it was slid all the way up.
For air travel, I think we need a seat belt extender because if you cinch the aircraft belt in the forward facing path, you'll never be able to release the seat belt. While the baby loves it, it is very heavy to lug around the airport and you can clock people with it if you're not careful. We bought the bag for it, but it's completely unsatisfactory. Sturdier sewing is essential and wheels would be nice.
A nice little seat June 15, 2010 Ananda A. Debnath (Austin, TX USA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Pros:
1. Remarkably sturdy seat
2. Narrower than most other models in the market
3. Easy to use
4. Folds up quite compact
Cons:
1. H-e-a-v-y!
2. Not as narrow as I expected... I was hoping for the center seating area to have a bit more room with two of these seats on either side
3. Rides lower than other seats - so kids have to crane their neck for a view outside
