Cancer Survivor InvolvementThe California Cancer Research Program (CRP) invites cancer survivors (or persons otherwise affected by cancer) from diverse backgrounds to participate in the merit review process as Survivor Reviewers. The general recommendation of the Institute of Medicine is that cancer survivors and relatives "must" be strongly represented in the decision-making process and the CRP shares this view. Modeling itself after other established research funding programs, CRP believes that Survivor Reviewers broaden the discussion of the proposed research to include an expanded focus on quality of life, health, ethical issues, and relevance to gender-specific and other kinds of cancers. CRP has committed itself to fully integrate the perspective of cancer survivors into the deliberations of the scientific merit review study sections.
